A password can be used to restrict the level of access to
the camera so that only specifi c individuals or groups
have full access to the images and/or confi guration
pages. Most network cameras support ‘anonymous user
access’ (by default), which means that in the absence
of a password, the camera images are available to
everyone with access to the network.
For high security applications, cameras should be
accessed over a secure connection that employs a data
encryption protocol called the Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL). Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator
support SSL, and many Web sites use this protocol to
protect confi dential user information, such as credit
card numbers. By convention, URLs that need an SSL
connection start with https: instead of http:.
